Samui hotels offer 1 night free stay

HOTELIERS on Koh Samui won’t be cowed by the global economic crisis, the country’s political turmoil and the swine-flu outbreak threatening to become a pandemic.

During the “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale,” which the Tourism Authority of Thailand held on Koh Samui for the first time last June 6, hotel owners offered 10,000 rooms for free to travelers coming to the island from June until Aug. 31.

The free rooms are part of the campaign to boost the local tourism industry, which has been hit hard by a considerable decrease in the number of visitors to the island.

The Grand Sale, which took place in Lake Chaweng, was attended by Suratthani Deputy Gov. Boonsong Maneesathit; Phanu Woramit, chief of the TAT office in Surathani; Koh Samui Mayor Ramnet Jaikwang; Reungnam Jaikwang, head of the Thai Hotel Association in Koh Samui; Seni Phuwasethaworn, head of Koh Samui Tourism Association.

The period from June to August is considered the tourist low season. The project is supported by over 100 hotels, which will provide free room for the first night’s stay of guests. Apart from that the room rate, airfare and food will be reduced between 10 and 70 percent to attract both Thais and foreigners to travel to Koh Samui.

“Koh Samui organized this project for the first time and we got support from Koh Samui’s hotel and tourism associations to provide tourists their first night on the island free of charge. I believe that this project will generate over Bt 20million income,” Phanu said.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The promotion free one night is applicable for the guests who stay up to 2 nights at the hotel. If the guests only stay one night, they have to pay the regular rate. There are more than 100 hotels ranged from two to five star hotel joined this project with the room rate available from Bt 800 to over Bt 15,000.  Mr.Ruengnam Jaikawang, the head of Thai Hotel Association said “Many hotels have joined the project and the list of the hotel will be shown at the website of TAT and hotel links so that tourists can update the information which hotel offers the promotion one first free night” In case tourists stay more 2 night like 5 night, it is recommended for the tourists to negotiate with the hotel about the room rate as now the hotel on Koh Samui is ready to offer for tourists as the way to boost up the economy and promote tourism at the same time “Most of the hotels which join this project are 3-4 star hotel while some are 5 star. Some hotels are affected by the decreased tourists number but some are not affected but they all want to join to show their cooperation as we want to make this opportunity as the season to promote our tourism. Now tourists can negotiate about the price to the hotel like the percentage of discount because some hotel have various conditions according to their policy. Some offer stay 3 nights pay 2 nights some stay 2 night pay one night or if guests stay more, they would get more discount.” said Mr.Ruengnam.The project targets domestic market and tourists from neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia which have the direct flight to Koh Samui. However the project is not available for registered Samui residents.

Troubled resort opts to rebrand than sell

By CHAT ANUPAN

A STRUGGLING hotel earlier reported to have been put up for sale, the Samui Buri Resort and Spa, has opted to get a well-known hotel chain to manage it.

Accor, the largest international hotel operator in Thailand, announced the opening of the newly rebranded Mercure Samui Buri.
In addition, Accor will also manage a newly built hotel, Mercure Samui Fenix, owned by Fico, a property development company.

Both hotels are beachfront. Earlier the Samui Buri Resort and Spa was reported to be looking for a buyer and that its asking price was Bt1.1 billion.

Mercure Samui Buri Resort marks Accor’s first mid-scale hotel on the island. The hotel is in the secluded northern Maenam Beach, which has stunning views of Phangan Island. It comprises 56 deluxe rooms and 29 private villas.

Mercure Samui Fenix is in the eastern part of the island, in Lamai Beach, the second largest tourist area of Samui. The hotel borders lush jungle and has access to isolated bays, small local villages, temples and the famous rock formations Hinta Hinyai.

Mercure Samui Fenix has 52 rooms and eight villas, a 600-square-meter swimming pool, a restaurant, pool bar and a fitness center.

“Samui Island is an ever-emerging destination with constant development of infrastructure and facilities appealing to international and domestic tourists. These two Mercure hotels, which portray the quality guaranteed by the Mercure brand, will fulfill demand for quality, internationally managed mid-scale hotels on the Island. We have successfully operated Mercure hotels in other major tourist destinations in Thailand such as Pattaya and Phuket, and we will bring the best of these hotels to the Samui hotel operations,” said Oswald Pichler, Accor vice president – Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

The economic slump and decreased number of tourists have taken a heavy toll on small hotels, some of which have laid off some staff or closed their operations while waiting for potential investors to take over.
Many of the hotels reportedly for sale are in Nathon, which is not a tourist area.

Seni Phuwasethaworn, head of the Koh Samui Tourism Association, admitted that many hotels on Samui need experienced hotel operators to take over in order to survive.

Hotels have shifted their marketing strategies toward attracting domestic tourists instead of relying on foreign travelers.

The new Coconut Villa Resort & Spa had its grand opening last March 24. Owner and managing director Thida Meesaeng led in welcoming guest to the family resort located at the Thong Tanot Beach.

Built on a five-rai (8,000-sqm) lot, the resort guarantees absolute privacy. It is painted in soft hues of white, green and brown to match the surrounding environment, while the rooms feature luxurious amenities.

A garden and swimming pool offer the perfect venue for holding parties, with the scenic Koh Taen and Koh Mat Sum clearly visible.
